Fundament

January 16, 2009 – 9:38 pm

Andreas Nicolas Fischer, born in Munich, Germany 1982. He concerns himself with the visualization of data, which normally lies beyond human perception. He delves into scientific information visualization, as well as programming generative systems, to create drawings, sculptures (data artefacts) and installations. The artist lives and works in Berlin.

The data sculpture Fundament shows the allocation of the world’s gross domestic product in comparison to the worldwide derivatives volume. The statistical data was aquired from the CIA World Factbook and the International Monetary Fund. The sculpture consists of two layers which visualize two data sets with the same principle.

New Finds

January 16, 2009 – 9:24 pm

o_expo_67_habitat_67_002

This is the Habitat Montreal designed by architect Moshe Safdie , built in 1967 for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition known also as the WORLD’s FAIR. My dad attended that Fair and says it was one of the most memorable times of his life. I’ve always loved that building.

This week has been brutally slow at work so I find myself distracted on the net…I am always looking for inspiration, beautiful things inspire me, a beautiful photograph, a great quote, a good book suggestion, new trends in design, 100 creative ways to solve the same problem, and so I am always looking…I doubt there will ever be an end to the net.

Today I read this great quote:

When someone loves you for a long, long time… REALLY loves you, then you become Real. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real, you can’t be ugly.
— The Velveteen Rabbit (via overflowing)

I am currently reading:  “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger

I am about half way through and I already don’t want to finish it. It’s a great love story and I am the eternal romantic..I remember one day that Ricardo told my dad how much he loved me and how I had changed his life…We had been having drinks with my dad the whole night and we were on the 10th round and I could barely hang anymore…Ricardo said he had to go but that he wanted me to go home with him and since we were at my home, I dared him to ask my dad thinking he would say ‘Nah, I’ll see you tomorrow then’.

To my surprise, he said ‘Ok, come on’ and so we went to talk to my dad…He began telling him the way he felt about me and my smile couldn’t have been wider because the edges of my mouth were about to touch in the back of my head…At last he said, ‘I love her with all my heart and I respect her even more and she’s changed my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined…[he said other things too, but at the end here's what he said].. do you mind if she comes home with me tonight? I’ll take care of her.’

My dad didn’t know what to say…he thought he was asking for my hand in marriage, hahaha, but alas, he said: ‘I understand and I am happy that you are happy but I can’t allow that, but we can have another round if you’re up to it!’ we just laughed and sat down again for another one, but my smile was still there. I remember telling him the next day that what he said to my dad was one of the most romantic things he ever did for me. This is one of my most beloved memories of Ricardo. The sincerity of his words and the way he looked at me as he told my dad how much he cared for me are deeply etched in my heart.

Getting back to the book…The story is very engaging and the story line is like nothing I have ever read before. I highly recommend it and it will soon be out in theaters with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams (love them both!!) I can’t wait to see it.

I’m also designing some new posters for myself :) They are inspired on song lyrics, snippets of poetry that have touched me in some way or the other at some point and I haven’t been able to let it out of my system so I decided to design them and put them out there.I will post them as soon as they are finished.

PBS: Thank you for the great programming

January 6, 2009 – 8:56 pm

I was just changing channels and stopped on PBS and to my surprise and delight they were showing the documentary of Helvetica, a classic but modern font that we as graphic designers all know but not always love. (I personally like it :)
I am glad that PBS has this high caliber programming and their audience is hopefully enlightened in the world of typography. I applaud their Programming Director for having such great taste.

Hooked on the Twilight Saga!

November 4, 2008 – 9:41 pm

twilight-pic250
It’s been a LONG TIME since I’ve gotten this hooked on a book as soon as I opened it to the first page. Recommended by both my twin sister and her best friend, I thought to myself, with these two serious actors recommending the books, the series must be good!

Stephenie Meyer’s four-part Twilight vampire series— which Amazon rates as the most popular young-adult fiction series since Harry Potter—is awaiting it’s upcoming release of Book One aptly called Twilight.

The story is devised from one of Meyer’s dreams, in which an awkward high school student named Bella moves to dismal Forks, Washington, where she falls in love with an ethereally handsome vampire named Edward. Although he lusts after her blood, what he’s most concerned about is the virtue of her soul. Aside from the whole vampire thing, he’s utter “perfection.”

I am on a non-stop rampage to finish the series, I am on book 4 and I am trying to go slow because I don’t want it to be finished, although I know I will re-read the first Book just before the movie to have it fresh in my head :) I can’t wait til the movie comes out!

I’ll be thirsty for November 21st  :F –> (these are my fangs haha!)

El EME

October 22, 2008 – 8:30 pm

Last week I traveled to the Dominican Republic to attend the First Ever Multidisciplinary Conference (Encuentro Multidisciplinario).

El EME, as it was aptly nicknamed, is an event whose objective is to familiarize, inspire and generate an interchange within recent and soon to be graduates interested in the fields of photography, illustration, graphic design, audiovisuals and advertising.

October 10-13 was a weekend filled with lectures, workshops and activities, all created by professionals within each discipline.

El EME is  a non-profit event brought to you by many collaborators under the following premise:
What is my specialization, my interests and how can I prepare myself and how can I best convey what I have learned?
In its first installment, el EME will bring together professionals fields whose work has evolved and made a significant footprint within their fields. El EME is a free conference for an audience who wants to share their thoughts and aspirations and have a better idea about the work force they are about to go into.

There will be a full report on what went on at el EME on the 2nd Anniversary Issue of Iniciativa Colectiva so watch out for that!
